Nerve: Adventures in the Science of Fear Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from LAURA E SOCKOL -- Great writing makes a great read. : A fantastic read - Holland combines engaging, enjoyable reading with accessible and well-researched science. As a clinical psychologist, I felt like I was getting away with something - either my work reading was a lot more fun than usual, or my fun reading had the added bonus of being really relevant to my work. I can’t wait to encourage students interested in both psychology and great writing to pick this one up. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Laura -- Adventures of Fear : What a relatable and remarkable book. Eva Holland takes us to her personal journey of fear and phobias. The book begins with her facing her biggest fear of losing her mother to developing her acrophobia from a young age. She takes us on her quest to cure her fear with several different types of treatments. I especially like how she integrated real science into her book. She put the science layman form making it easy to follow and understand while making it thought-provoking. She was able to make science intriguing, which is hard to do in a memoir. She ends her journey of fear in her book accepting fear. Eva talks about why we need fear and the importance of it in our lives. We can capture the passion and resilience of Eva in her book. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from shelby mcdermott -- Thoughtful, Deep, and Motivating : This was a wonderful book. Eva Holland delves deep into the science and emotion of fear and loss, and her style is particularly easy to read. She pulls from past personal experience, current studies, and launches herself into certain therapies and exposures that she then draws data and experience from. Her experience of loss essentially inspired a journey for her to understand her deepest fears and conquer them if possible. The way she freely narrates her raw emotion and perspective is inspiring, and this book really helped me consider some things in my own life that I could work on and grow from. I'd definitely recommend it, as it didn't disappoint! ( Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Laura Elizabeth Rathjen -- If you have fear's and anxieties you can relate. : Nerve is a cross between non-fiction and memoir. Eva Holland starts by telling us how her biggest fear came to light and all her other insecurities and anxieties. Eva Holland takes you through a journey of her own personal fears of her finding a way to conquer them. She also addresses the science of how our brain can process those fears and heal from them. The way she captures you by having you relive her trauma makes you feel connected in some way. Her writing has much depth and feeling you can feel her passion coming off the pages. Personally, I enjoyed reading this book due to my own anxieties and feel that anyone who suffers from fears or anxieties should pick this book up. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cindy Kuzma -- A compelling personal narrative with implications for us all : I've long been a fan of Eva Holland's magazine writing, so I was eagerly awaiting this release. I know she never would've guessed the circumstances around the time of the launch, but I found the book all the more compelling given the state of heightened fear and dread we've all been living in this year. As in many of her excellent features, she expertly weaves her own story and experiences into deeply reported scientific histories. I learned so much and feel like I have more empathy for others' fears—and a deeper understanding of my own psyche. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from victoria -- A Journey On Fear : This book is about the journey of Holland and how she studied different ways to deal with her different types of fear. Some of her fears were really relatable to me. The fears that I relate to are of heights and the fear of losing my love ones. Also in the end of the book you learn that some fears can be good while others can be bad for you. I would recommend this book because I usually don't like to read but this book really sucked me in. I got into it because it gets right into the action where Holland is rock climbing. Overall it is a great book. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2020 )
