  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from KingdomCAPT -- Beautiful and Inspiring! : Modern literature pales in comparison to how this story is told. Character development is deep and full. I have to say, I was surprised at the artistic license taken by both the Charlton Heston movie version as well as the 2015/16 remake. This story differs from both in marvelous ways. You won't be able to skim through this, it will force you to ponder and reflect. I'm so glad I decided to read this. A masterpiece! ( Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bob Nelms -- A Book for All of Humanity : All I remembered about Ben Hur was the Charlton Heston movie, which I saw when I was young -- and all I remembered of that was the galley scenes and of course the chariot scene. The reason I bought and read the book was because of the title: A Tale of the Christ. About half way through the book, I did a Google Search on it and found that it was one of the most popular Christian pieces of literature of all time. I had no idea! I am only 82% of the way through the book, but will rank up there in the top 5 books of all time for me. I especially appreciate Ben Hur's struggle between his human desire for an earthly king, and his soul's need for a heavenly savior -- and the influences in his life to lead him to the truth. A book for all of humanity. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Steve Campbell -- Great historical fiction and inspirational story : The author does a masterful job of weaving Ben-Hur's story into the story of Jesus' life on earth. The characterizations are full and rich, the description of the settings is thorough and evocative, and the plot is well conceived, alternating between pulse-pounding action and philosophical/theological dialogue. Written as it was in the 19th century, this book uses King James English for the dialogue, which is notable, but I didn't find it overly distracting. I was thoroughly engrossed in the story from beginning to end. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2017 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from David Welch -- Good story : There is a lot to like in this book. The story is in depth and enthralling, the characters are interesting, and it's clear the author cared greatly for them. The plot is well known, due to the movies, but what surprised me was how different the book is to what's on film. There's more characters, more sub-plots, and a different structure all together. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bablessing -- Ben Hur is meant to be enjoyed piece by piece : Ben Hur. A classic tale about revenge. A tale about finding out who really has your back, discovering who you can really trust. Finding out that who you thought these people were may not be in reality who they are at their heart. All along the way finding out you arent the person you thought you were either. Worth the read. The beginning part of the book takes its time in character development. Don't rush this, its important latter. Ben Hur is meant to be enjoyed piece by piece. Slowly like a good ole chunk of cake. Please read and enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2016 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from SJ -- Story wonderful, but don’t buy the Signet addition : I bought this book for my son’s AO year 6, and am pre-reading it. The story is wonderful- I can hardly put it down. HOWEVER- the binding is terrible! I am only a few chapters in, and the pages are already coming away from the spine. I have over 100 year old books that are more intact than this new book. Who would bind ANY book this way - let alone a book of over 500 pages????:(. I purchased an older hardcover edition for my son to read - it is coming and will hopefully be an improvement over the Signet. I know it’s linked in AO, but don’t buy it - get something nicer if you can. Or else stock up on tape or glue. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from James W. Vice -- An American classic : I reread it for the first time in 70 years and had forgotten a great deal. (I've forgotten so much of the Charlton Heston film that I can't compare them, except for a strong conjecture that film conveys only a small part of the book.) Wallace is a better writer than in my memory and reads very well. Of course, I may have been too shallow at 13. The pictures reproduced in the Kindle are too small to add anything substantial. In all, it was a nice interruption to my rereading all of Dickens and my first reading of Zane Grey. (The Kindle Oasis is great, since I like to read three or four books at a time---presently four on KIndle and Toynbee by my bed.) ( Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joel Marleau -- Classics are always refreshing : Snowy nights are perfect for revisiting a classic! Before watching the remake, I wanted to refresh my memory banks. This author writes with intelligence & wit. His description of the chariot race was amazing...I could imagine the whole tense episode. His ability to get the reader to grasp the cultural religious mindset of that period was ingenious. Read the book before watching the movie-it fills in where the movie is weak. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- Always A Great Read : With yet another film of this to shortly grace cinema screens throughout the country it is good to see that this story is being kept alive, although for most I should think that they have not read the book before, and the mention of Ben-Hur conjures up the famous chariot race, which everyone seems to enjoy. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Puffin -- Jesus' influence and compassion wins through : This is an excellent book and well worth the read. Running parallel with Jesus' life is that of a young man from a princely Sadducee family. There is tragedy, the need for revenge and yet ... along the way the young man meets unknowingly at the time with Jesus while both were still young and the memory comes back to him much later on when he again witnesses Jesus' compassion for others - yet still he expects this young 'King' to come in military form to rid them of the Romans. The young man - Judah - meets one of the Wise Men during his journey through life and along with an old servant of his father's they have quite a lot of influence on him. Ultimately, as Judah stands at the foot of the cross, realisation dawns and he commits his future to Christ. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 18, 2015 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Val -- I like it : This is a pretty good yarn considering how long ago it was written Iin the 1800s). Lew Wallace must have been very well read or had a fertile imagination. It has rather too much description in it for my liking but I'm pressing on with it. The book is a bit like the film with lots of extra little stories, as are most adaptations. The big set pieces from the film are in the book but there are lots of little strands running through which are not in the film. A good read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 17, 2014 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Louise Rule -- Poorly formatted : I have only had this book for a day. It will take a long time to read because it is very poorly formatted. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2014 )
